Who are we looking for?

GHD is proud to have one of North America’s largest tunnel design practices and GHD has an excellent opportunity for a Senior Tunnel Engineer/Tunnel Lead to join our North American operations. Our tunnel group is currently the Technical Advisor for the Scarborough Subway Extension and Yonge North Subway Extension projects. Building from this work you will lead tunnel projects interface, while providing a balance of client engagement, overseeing technical work, mentorship and project management. The primary role is to provide oversight of tunnelling projects within GHD’s Rail and Transportation and Water Business, and to support other tunnelling projects across Canada or internationally, as opportunities present. Business Development & Client Service Skills:

Some focus areas will include:

  • Client interface, with owners such as transport and water authorities and contractors for design and construct projects
  • Ability to interact between Design and Construction teams, build and maintain relationships and drive efficiency
  • A demonstrated success in managing design consultants projects to time and cost targets, engineering standards and contract requirements.
  • A demonstrated flexibility and resilience in dealing with complex issues and an ability to deploy sound problem-solving methodologies
  • Project & design management, from feasibility & tender through to construction

Specialist Knowledge and Experience in:

The following experience is desirable:

  • Led the delivery of detailed design of complex tunnel projects
  • Leading tunnel supervision or oversight of a design team for major interdisciplinary tunnelling projects
  • Comprehensive experience in multiple types of tunnel projects including: cut and cover, TBM, EPB, Road header, SEM, NATM, Microtunnelling or other trenchless methods
  • Experience in the design of tunnels in rock and soft ground
  • Rail transit tunnel and deep station design experience
  • Understanding of analytical and numerical analysis methods, precast concrete segmental tunnel linings and shaft design using various industry standard engineering software’s (PLAXIS, FLAC, etc.)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of different tunnelling & shaft construction methods, logistics, equipment & methodology selection
  • In depth knowledge and application of settlement instrumentation & monitoring
  • Tunnelling construction experience with TBM’s and precast linings will be an asset
  • Involvement in preparation of GBR’s, review of GDR and geotechnical investigation planning for tunnel and underground structures
  • Experience in P3 / AFP and design–build project delivery including a detailed understanding of the preparation and interpretation of Project Specific Output Specifications
  • High level knowledge of cost estimating and scheduling related to tunnel/shaft construction
  • Experience in risk management analysis, evaluation and presentation to the client
  • Claims resolution & adjudication

What you will bring to the team:

  • A natural communicator & strategic thinker who is proactive, professional & collaborative
  • An experienced tunnel construction professional with a technical focus and tunnel industry profile across North America with owners and contractors
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or related subject area along with a master’s degree in Tunnel/Geotechnical Engineering will be an asset
  • 15 years post-graduate experience with a minimum of 5 years in large diameter tunnels and underground projects
  • Professional engineering designation - P.Eng. in Ontario and other provinces and US States
  • Demonstrated skills in project management – capable of leading medium to large tunnelling projects in the transportation and rail engineering areas
  • Demonstrated local experience in either a constructor or engineering consultancy with a commercial mindset.
  • Proven success in meeting or exceeding the expectations of customers and partners and in meeting organizational mission commitments and deliverables
