We are passionate about keeping Australia’s infrastructure operating safely and efficiently.

We offer the intellect and technical expertise often found in larger firms, delivered through a more flexible and responsive business model that encourages partnership, competitive pricing and innovation. Our core values encompass integrity, agility, technical excellence, pragmatism, and safety.

Sterling’s EAM team works with our clients to effectively operationalise strategic asset management planning, establishing a line-of-sight between organisational strategies and O&M delivery cycles. Our team offers integrated technical services across the full asset management lifecycle including planning, inspections & monitoring, investigations & assessments, engineering design, and construction & maintenance.

Practical solutions and an authentic, personal customer service experience remain at the core of our identity. You’ll find us to be an authentic, straight-talking, capable, and “sleeves rolled up” business with clear passion and purpose in our work. We are committed to enabling intelligent, practical asset stewardship.

About the Role

The role of Senior Structural Engineer encompasses a combination of activities including managing complex project deliveries, developing tender responses, building strong client and stakeholder relations, as well providing mentoring, expertise and technical support to members of the EAM team.

First and foremost, we want someone who has clear passion for their work and is a great cultural fit with our team. There is a bright future ahead and we want great team players to come on the journey with us.

When it comes to technical requirements, we’re looking for an engineer with a strong grounding in engineering first principles, strong demonstrable capabilities in structural design and analysis. You must have a passion and curiosity about aging infrastructure and clever application of technology to solve problems – not just the “sexy” big build program. We would like our Senior Engineer to have a specialty in bridge structures, but breadth across other civil/structural asset classes as well such as culverts, retaining walls, overhead gantries, etc.

We need someone who can run medium-to-large scale projects, be accountable for outputs and deadlines, and mentor our younger engineers in all things bridges and structures. Assistance with tender response would also be a key aspect of the role, as would liaison with our in-house Construction & Maintenance team as well as our Rail Access & Consulting team. We will expect our Senior Engineer to interact with our clients, consulting directly on the outcomes of our project work and articulating engineering recommendations, building relationship and trust through that process. We would like our Senior Engineer to bring their own strong industry relationships to our business, broadening our network and opportunities.

Perhaps most importantly, we’re looking for an individual who’s looking for something a bit different and likes the idea of working at a company that is growing and changing in scale, capabilities and reach.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the undertaking of engineering activities and delivery of engineering outputs on our projects, acting as Lead Engineer and/or Project Manager.
  • Work in partnership and close collaboration with our Principal Engineers and Directors to provide leadership to project teams, effectively navigate project QA processes, and liaise with our clients.
  • Collaborating with the engineering team, external stakeholders, and contractors, to achieve project deliverables for a variety of engineering and asset management projects.
  • Undertaking engineering design and analysis activities through the full design process, from concept design through to reviewing feasibility and application, through to the IFC stage.
  • Undertaking load rating and structural assessment of railway/road bridges (concrete, steel and timber)
  • Providing on-site support throughout the constructions process, including the generation of swift and practical solutions for any design or construction related complications that arise.
  • Production of technical engineering reports outlining project context and background, findings, engineering calculations, basis of design/assessment, and recommendations.
  • Assisting with the evaluation of tenders and preparation of tender responses.
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships.
  • Where required, conducting detailed engineering investigations (Level 3) for complex bridge structures, which includes identifying causes of deterioration or failures, structural significance and implications, documenting findings, and recommending solutions to remediate.
  • Providing mentorship to more junior engineers in the EAM team.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and advancements in structural engineering technology

Experience and Qualifications:

• Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering from a recognised tertiary institution

• CPEng, NER, RPEng (or ability to obtain in the short-term).

• Minimum 8 years' work experience as a Structural Engineer (in Transportation Infrastructure preferred)

• Demonstrated structural engineering design, assessment & load rating experience specific to bridges, culverts, retaining walls, signal & gantry structures, etc.

  • Strong technical report writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with all levels of staff and clients
  • Demonstrated knowledge of industry and/or regulatory standards relating to Australian Structural Engineering codes and standards particularly AS5100
